Deciding what the best type website is for your business

Updated: Apr 28, 2019

When you're giving your website a makeover or creating a new one, it's important to consider its purpose so you choose the right platform. Also keep the purpose to one thing so you don't confuse your customer (or yourself!).

The following are the three most common websites for business:

1. Information or branding website This type of site is for the purpose of providing information about your products and services and to build credibility and awareness of your brand. These sites do not have the capability for online money transactions. Content on such sites would typically include:

  • what solution/s you offer to your customers

  • what benefits your product and/or services provide

  • client testimonials to build credibility and trust

  • who you are so your customers can connect on a human level

  • contact information so your customers can communicate with you

A good example of an information site is National Grid.

2. E-commerce website

If your purpose is to sell products and/or services online this is the site for you. To do this you will need an e-commerce (electronic commerce) platform, such as shopify, so that money transactions can be conducted online.

The content of your site should be mapped out and take your customers on a journey through your sales funnel right through to a sale.

One of the big boys in this arena is Amazon.co.uk

3. Content-oriented or publishing website

This type of site is for publishing content with the purpose of becoming an influencer. Revenue from these sites usually comes from advertisements and sponsored content so you will need to build a strong following to attract other businesses to invest.
